You did WHAT? (as he grips the TV stand for dear life) (Katie Hall Photo) |
Tonight, instead of watching TV, Tom and I broke out the Wii from downstairs to play some tanks (you know that one from Wii Play?). This is sad, but after a rousing tanks game, some Wii Tennis, and bowling with a lot of trash talking (I won), Tom looked at me and said "I felt like we had a date tonight!" And I agreed--"Me too!" Poor us, you are thinking. Wii on a Sunday classified as a date? I know, I know, lame balls over here, but you know what?
Little things like ditching the TV really get you to spend more quality time together (even if some of that time is spent arguing over board game rules--who, us?) Tom and I get competitive when it comes to any kind of game. After we finished playing that duck shooting game I had white knuckles and sore arm muscles. It gets serious up in here (and also hilarious). You can only argue so long that his Scattergory word doesn't count before breaking into ab muscle spasm-ing laughter.
Who else has gotten rid of cable? Have you considered it? Are we the only weirdos out there?
that sounds like a super fun date
ReplyDeleteWe got rid of cable awhile ago, but still watch stuff on Netflix. For the month of January I challenged myself to give up all tv for the month. Not as bad as I though! Good luck with out cable, hopefully you will find you don't miss it at all!
ReplyDeleteWe don't have cable but we have Netflix and Hulu. I a, trying hard not to watch as much TV and do more without it. Your date night sounds super fun to me!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like such a fun idea! I mean, I don't know about getting rid of cable just because I have certain show I need to watch...yes, need. ;) But I love the idea of Wii date nights!
ReplyDeleteWe don't have cable or netflix. The only time we turn on the tv is to watch a movie together and it has been great! We do watch a few tv shows together on Hulu, but once the show is over we just turn off the computer. So that way we don't waste hardly anytime watching shows. It was hard at first but now I don't miss it at all

This will definitely make you more productive. Good move ! I got rid of my tv when my daughter was born. She is almost 3 now and the only time we watch 'tv' is occassional cartoons or a dvd on the laptop. It sounds like you have already spent a great evening with communication. It will benefit your family so much in the long run. Yayyy

Good for you guys! I don't think I could do it though, TV is my only way I can relax, otherwise I feel like I need to be productive and would be doing something every second of everyday and I would never sit still...at least that's what I'm going to keep telling myself, hehe. Have fun finding other things to do :)
ReplyDeleteGood for you guys! My best friend and her husband just did this too! I actually think it's awesome and NOT weird at all. I grew up without cable because my parents didn't want us watching TV very much. John Patrick and I played outdoors and could have cared less! I think this is a great move! I definitely have a goal to watch less TV this year. :)
ReplyDeleteWe didn't get rid of cable, but we've never had it to begin with since we got married! We don't miss it at all! We were just talking about this this weekend; we LOVE it. It will help productivity and your relationships in the home! xo
ReplyDeleteLove this picture!! So adorable:)
ReplyDeleteWe are oh so close to cutting the cord - it's happening this week! I'm excited more than anything else. Love the possibility of a stay-at-home date night!
ReplyDeletewe're considering it to save money but it's SOOOOO hard!!!!! i'm a tv addict, yet i don't want my son to turn into one.
ReplyDeleteI consider it all the time but my hubs won't even consider it, especially now that the NHL will be on almost nightly.
ReplyDeleteThis is really nice blog to read, If any buddy want buy Baby clothes for his children please go throw below link www.toetum.com.au
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a totally awesome date night! (or maybe I'm lame balls too!) My husband and I didn't have cable (or a television of any kind) for years, until he began producing a news program and we were given the entire package for free. We now use it to watch the occasional HBO or Showtime show, but we definitely keep it to a minimum. There's something very freeing and eye-opening about removing television from the equation. There is some really lovely, high quality television programs being produced out there, but they are few and far between. (Plus commercials are just about the worst thing ever.) I'm really happy for you guys in this decision! Here's to many more fun family game nights!
ReplyDeleteI don't have cable! Well we have the basic local channels and PBS, but that's it. We have a Netflix subscription so we can watch movies here and there. It definitely took a while to get used to!
